Parkville Station Metro Tunnel Project: Innovative Scaffolding Solution

SIS successfully delivered critical scaffolding solutions for the prestigious Parkville Station development, a key component of Victoria’s Metro Tunnel project. Located in Melbourne’s renowned education, health, and research precinct, this new station will provide unprecedented access to world-class institutions, including the University of Melbourne, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Royal Women’s Hospital, and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

The project presented significant logistical and technical challenges including creating multi-level access from street level down three levels into the tunnel, ensuring stretcher accessibility for emergency situations, supporting steel walkway installation in confined underground spaces, maintaining compliant pedestrian and trade access at street level, and managing material delivery with a compound located over 500 meters from the work site.

SIS’s scaffolding division implemented a comprehensive solution by designing and constructing scaffolding that provided crucial emergency access from street level down through all three tunnel levels. The scaffolding was engineered to facilitate the movement of steel components and equipment required for walkway installation. At street level, SIS created support access platforms that served both construction trades and maintained safe pedestrian pathways along the east and west sides of the project area. The team developed meticulous scheduling and resource allocation to overcome the 500 meter separation between the unloading compound and work areas. The SIS scaffolding solution enabled safe and efficient installation of the steel walkway infrastructure, uninterrupted construction progress despite logistical challenges, maintenance of public access around the construction site, and compliance with all safety and accessibility requirements in a complex CBD environment.

This project demonstrates SIS’s ability to solve complex access challenges in high-profile infrastructure developments, contributing to Melbourne’s transformative Metro Tunnel Project that will enhance urban mobility and access to essential services.
