Sophisticated Scaffolding for Melbourne’s Airport Terminal Cladding Replacement

SIS delivered a sophisticated scaffolding solution for a critical safety upgrade project involving the removal of flammable cladding from an airport terminal building and its connecting hotel. The project presented exceptional challenges as it spanned both passenger-facing areas and operational zones of the airport, with the absolute requirement that airport operations continue uninterrupted throughout the construction period.

The SIS design and engineering team collaborated closely with the client’s project management team to develop specialised scaffolding systems that could function effectively in the unique constraints of the passenger-facing areas. These custom designs accommodated continuous public access through entrance and exit doors while maintaining security and safety. The scaffolding configurations were specifically engineered to allow for live vehicular traffic entering and exiting the airport while keeping construction progress on schedule.

For the operational side of the airport, which was not visible to the general public, SIS provided additional scaffolding solutions that addressed the complexities of working in active aviation environments. The team demonstrated exceptional understanding of the safety protocols and operational requirements when working alongside active aircraft operations and service vehicles. Through innovative problem-solving, SIS successfully met these unique challenges, enabling their client, Maz Group, to maintain their daily schedule while adhering to strict budget guidelines established by the airport authority (APAM). The SIS teams showed remarkable ingenuity in designing solutions for each of the project’s distinctive elements, including working around an operational airport and carpark, structuring scaffolding at significant heights with limited tie-in points, and building stable platforms that allowed the recladding team to perform their daily tasks efficiently and safely.

The exceptional performance on this complex project resulted in SIS becoming the preferred scaffolding provider for all Maz Group projects at the Melbourne Airport, demonstrating SIS’s capability to deliver sophisticated access solutions for critical infrastructure in highly regulated, operational environments.
