Swanson Pier Specialised Scaffolding Solution: Overcoming Marine Environment Challenges
The project at Swanson Pier required a specialised scaffolding solution that would enable the client’s team to access both the front and underside of the pier. The primary challenge was to design and install a hung Layher scaffold that could withstand the harsh marine environment and facilitate the client’s extensive maintenance work on the pier..
SIS designed and engineered a robust scaffold system anchored into the pier’s steel beams and anchored into the bottom of the pier. The scaffold was constructed in stages to align with the client’s work schedule, incorporating a 40 meter lower platform that needed to be fully submerged in saltwater. Additionally, we provided multiple access stairs to access the hung platform and an extra stair bay for divers and workers to enter barges and boats, ensuring seamless access to various work areas.
The project at Swanson Pier presented unique challenges, including requiring the lower platform to remain submerged in saltwater. This necessitated a system capable of enduring the corrosive environment, leading to the selection of the Layher scaffold system. The installation was further complicated by fluctuating tide levels, requiring careful planning and execution from barges set up in the water. These unique aspects of the project highlight its complexity and our ability to provide innovative solutions.
Our design team employed early 3D concept methodologies and detailed drawings to identify and address potential issues. This collaborative approach with Freyssinet allowed for continuous development and problem-solving, ensuring the scaffold integrated seamlessly with project staging. The meticulous attention to design and planning and a collaborative mindset enabled the team to identify and resolve a significant issue that could have impacted the tight project deadline before work commenced.
SIS guided the client through the entire project, considering the challenging environment and access constraints under the pier.
