308 Exhibition Street

At 308 Exhibition Street—one of Melbourne’s most prestigious developments featuring twin luxury towers connected by a sky bridge—our team faced a distinctive engineering challenge: creating access solutions for an almost-completed structure without compromising its integrity. The client required external access to complete GRC panelling installation on Tower 2, but traditional methods would risk damaging the nearly finished building. Unlike demolition projects where heavy weighted beams pose no structural concerns, this project demanded precision and care.

Drawing on our extensive engineering expertise, we designed and fabricated custom heavy-duty trusses in-house at our facility. These sophisticated square hollow round section trusses were precision-engineered at 15 metres in length, varied in dimensions from 1.2-2.4 metres wide and 1.5-1.8 metres high, and weighed 7-8 tonnes each. They were strategically positioned to support three scaffold modules between trusses. When site constraints presented additional challenges—including restricted access due to tower crane placement and obstructing crane grillages—our engineers developed customised support legs with additional bracing to span these obstacles.

Through collaborative effort between our Engineering, Design, and Operations teams, we delivered a comprehensive access solution that preserved the building’s integrity while enabling the completion of external cladding work. Our innovative approach not only solved the immediate challenge but created capacity for future project needs, demonstrating SIS’s ability to engineer solutions for even the most complex industrial access requirements.
